Transducer Installation

Fitting and installing a depth-sounding or fish-finding transducer onto a boat requires familiarity with the transducer being attached as well as the boat or the hull being attached to. A number of things have to be considered beforehand when installing a transducer in order not to waste time, effort, and money.

The Right Transducer
In getting a transducer, inform your source about the boat you’re going to use it with. This is very important since not all transducers will be a fit for your boat. Thus, it’s also vital that you get the opinion of a boat expert if you are not familiar with boats.

The engine system of your boat is always of prime consideration. Among the questions that need to be answered concern your propulsion system which could either be one of the following: single inboard, outboard, inboard/outboard, jet-drive, or sail. The construction of the boat and the angles of the body should also be known beforehand.

The Perfect Spot
A transducer should be mounted at the rear of the boat, but this doesn’t mean just anywhere behind it. There’s an ideal spot for any transducer for it to be able to deliver reliable data to the user.

It’s a good idea to install the transducer near the imaginary line that bisects the boat lengthwise. However, it may not be a good idea to align to the bottom of the boat if the hull is tapered towards the bottom. The main idea is for the transducer installation to be unaffected by turbulence created by the engine. Pushing to install as far as possible to the port or starboard usually gives good results.

General Rules
If you have a single drive outboard, transducer installation should be on the starboard side (right) and out of reach of the propeller radius. On a twin outboard, transducer installation must be in-between the motors. If it’s an inboard motor boat, install on the starboard side away from propeller radius.

The rules used for propeller engines also apply for jet-driven boats. As for sailboats, the starboard side is also standard, but it should always be outside the keel, hull protector, or centerline. As with motor boats, it should be where there is little turbulence from the water.

Don’ts
It is good to keep in mind some protocols on what not to do during transducer installation: (1) Mount the device where it will not get turbulence. (2) Avoid mounting in places where transport support for the boat is secured. (3) Do not install where there are loose boat fittings. (4) Avoid reverse angles of the hull which can hamper data.

Just knowing these few things about transducer installation can already save you much.
